Known Incompatible Wireless Routers and Gateways

Please note that information on this page can change, as firmware updates by the router's manufacturer could become available that may allow a workable online connection for the Wii console.

  • Routers with known compatibility issues with the Wii console:
In working with dozens of wireless routers, both here at Nintendo and with our consumers, we have determined the following wireless routers to likely be incompatible with some or all of the Wii's online features.

    Belkin
    F5D6231-4 vers. 1000
    F5D7230-4 vers. 4000
F5D8233-4 vers. 1022 (likely not compatible for playing against other players)

  • Wireless Routers/Gateways provided by Internet Service Providers
If your Internet Service Provider (ISP) provided you with a router, it's possible you may have problems connecting the Wii online with that router. Due to the way the Wii console interacts with these routers' firewalls (sometimes called an SPI firewall), it may not be able to connect online, even when using the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector or the Wii LAN Adapter. Click here to see our list of known ISP-provided routers/gateways that may have compatibility issues with the Wii console.

There are two possible solutions you can try that may help your Wii console successfully connect online through these ISP-provided routers or gateways.

    • Working with the SPI Firewall
If you are able to log in and disable the router or gateway's firewall, you may be able to get the Wii console connected online. To do this you may need to get a "super user" password from your ISP.
    • Updating your Wii console
If you use an ISP that prevents the firewall or SPI firewall setting from being adjusted, or if you prefer not to adjust the router's firewall, updating your Wii console with the latest system menu may resolve the console's ability to connect with Nintendo's servers. (This may be especially true if your Wii has not been updated to Wii Menu 2.2* or higher. Link here for information on determining which Wii menu version you have.) To download the system update to your Wii system, you will need to successfully connect your Wii console online. If your current connection through your ISP-provided router is preventing a connection, you will need to find an alternative online connection, such as taking your Wii console to a friend's house where there is a compatible internet connection. If this option is not available to you, link here for information on other options. If after performing this update you are still experiencing problems, please call 1-800-255-3700 so that we may assist you further.
